Michael Birley specializes in civil litigation with a practice emphasis on the defence of claims against professionals, particularly stock brokers, commercial litigation, and in administrative law, representing health law regulatory agencies.
He has acted for a number of securities firms in claims against them before self-regulatory organizations, the Ontario Securities Commission and the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario.
In his administrative practice Michael acts for healthcare regulatory authorities, as general counsel, and on matters of professional regulation and professional misconduct.
He acts for corporations and individuals in a range of general commercial litigation matters, injunction proceedings and general disputes, involving the securities industry in particular.
Michael has represented clients before numerous tribunals and before disciplinary committees of Health Colleges, real estate regulators, insurance regulators and the law society of Upper Canada. He has appeared for clients at all levels of court including the Superior Court of Justice, Court of Appeal of Ontario, Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada.
He also advises clients on alternative dispute resolution, as appropriate to the situation and the goals of the client.
With extensive experience in the specialized area of securities litigation, health law and defence of claims against professionals, combined with his competence and experience in litigation, advocacy and court-related work, Michael provides clients with responsive, timely and appropriate legal counsel in these highly sophisticated areas of law. |
